Recently, WhatsApp has initiated an update for beta testers that introduces a new capability aimed at enhancing user safety from unsolicited messages coming from unknown contacts. A feature tracker has identified this addition, which automatically safeguards users from unidentified senders by filtering incoming messages based on certain criteria. A select group of beta testers currently has permission to use this functionality, which requires manual activation. This feature will eventually complement two other advanced safety options that focus on preserving user privacy on the messaging platform.
Upon updating to WhatsApp beta version 2.24.20.16 for Android, users will find a new option that enables them to prevent messages from certain unknown accounts. Beta testers who have installed this latest version can navigate to the three-dot menu, then go to Settings, followed by Privacy, then Advanced, and finally select Block unknown account messages. Confirmation of this toggle’s availability was reported by Gadgets 360 in the current beta version.
The application's explanation for this new capability indicates that it is intended not just for securing individual accounts but also for optimizing device performance. When turned on, the app will restrict messages sent by unknown accounts if their quantity exceeds a specific threshold. An overwhelming number of spam messages could detract from the performance of a user's device, and this feature seemingly aims to shield users from automated spam communications.
At present, this functionality is exclusive to beta testers, implying that those using the stable release will need to wait for a broader arrival. Once enabled, users will still have the ability to view messages from unknown accounts, but only up to an unspecified limit; WhatsApp is unlikely to share this information to avoid aiding spammers in circumventing the feature.
The new capability to block messages from unidentified accounts will be introduced alongside two additional features that enhance privacy on the app: safeguarding a user’s IP address during calls and disabling link previews to help prevent third parties from deducing a user’s IP address. All three features are optional and must be activated by the user on their device.
