Arc Search on the iPhone, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), unveils a fresh capability introducing voice functionality. Named Call Arc, this feature is activated in a playful manner when the device is held close to the ear, providing spoken answers to user inquiries and bypassing the need to visually engage with screen content. Additionally, Arc Search incorporates a 'Browse for me' option, which leverages diverse AI technologies to compile a webpage that is relevant to the user's search.
Enabling the Call Arc Function
The rollout of Call Arc is underway, with a global user base beginning to access the feature presently or anticipating access shortly. Users must update their Arc Search application via the App Store to utilize this feature. The Browser Company delivers this function through a unique call interface that activates upon positioning the iPhone near the ear, assuming the Arc Search app is in use.
Exploring the Call Arc Feature within Arc Search
Activation introduces a call interface to the user, showcasing an 'end call' button, a speaker icon for audio adjustments, and an option for more detailed responses. Central to this interface is a vibrant, animated emoticon of a smiley face with 'Arc' displayed above. A call duration timer is also present to track the length of the interaction.
Examinations by Gadgets 360 confirm the functionality of this feature, noting a brief delay of around four seconds dependent on internet speed, that marginally impacts user experience. During this wait, a call waiting tone signals processing, followed by the AI's vocal reply. Additionally, text responses are visible on the screen.
This feature proves especially beneficial in circumstances requiring hands-free operation or in situations where reading the screen is impractical, like cooking. It allows for auditory reception of instructions without interruption to ongoing tasks. Of note, ChatGPT with GPT-4o similarly provides seamless voice responses via internet access. While Google's Gemini app is pending release on iOS, its Android version already supports comparable voice response features.
